I have never been much of a
technological know-it-all but it’s a role I play while taking care
of my grandma. When something stops working in this house Gram automatically
assumes that I have the ability to fix it. SHE’S CRAZY! It’s taken a good dose of luck
and help from Heaven and phone calls to get issues sorted out.
When Mom and I first arrived
in January, her laptop wasn’t connecting to the wireless.
Then my gram’s netbook stopped working. When my netbook arrived in the
mail (I had left it in Michigan by accident) it didn’t connect to the wireless
either. Gram swore up and down that she changed the password and my cousin who
set up the wireless confirmed that it was changed. However, after talking with
customer support for 45 minutes, it was determined that the password had NOT
been changed and the laptop and netbooks had been blocked from the wireless.
Another incident occurred when
the printer stopped working. I did not want to call customer support for this.
But Gram really needed me to look at it. I still don’t know what
exactly was wrong with it or how I even fixed it. But I played with the settings on the printer
and the computer. It took about 30 minutes but now it works. Maybe that’s all
that matters?
My gram is sent pictures
from relatives on her phone and it quickly fills up the memory. Gram, of
course, doesn’t want to delete any of the pictures. Naturally, I get “hired” to
put the pictures on her computer. You’d think it would be as simple as
hooking the phone up to the computer and transferring the files that way. Of
course that doesn’t work for me. There is something wrong with the program on her computer.. So I
used the Bluetooth program on my netbook with the Bluetooth on her phone,
transferred the pictures over, put them on my flash drive and then transfer
them to her computer. There must be an
easier way to do that and if anybody has a better idea, feel free to let me
know.
Those are just a few examples of
the random things I do around the house. Every so often Gram will press the
wrong button on the remote and mess up the satellite. That’s usually easy to
fix. Gram bought a new television for
the kitchen last week and I had to program the remote. She also doesn’t know
how to program the DVR.
I’m grateful to be young enough
to have some technical knowledge but I know that my luck will run out soon, though I’m happy to help whenever I can.
